The FOLiAGE (Folate in Ageing) study is a prospective observational study investigating the impact of the UK folic acid fortification programme on older adults participating in the TwinsUK cohort. The study will examine changes in folate status and related biomarkers following implementation of mandatory fortification of non-wholemeal wheat flour, and explore relationships with health, ageing-related outcomes, diet, lifestyle factors, and the gut microbiome. Participants will undergo collection of biological samples, complete questionnaires, and undertake a range of physical, cognitive, and health assessments. Data generated through this study will contribute to understanding how folic acid fortification may influence healthy ageing and support future research through establishment of a valuable bioresource.
